Procedure for Evaluating Position Statements on Behalf of the ASVCP
January, 2005

Purpose

ASVCP committees or members may develop formal statements representing the views of the Society as a whole that address specific issues. Prior to publication or distribution to the intended audience, such statements must be reviewed and approved by the Executive Board to ensure that they appropriately reflect the objectives and interests of the ASVCP as set forth in the ASVCP Constitution. Examples of such initiatives may include position papers, review articles, website communications, meeting symposia, posters, etc.

Proposed Procedure

1. Committees should submit such initiatives through the ASVCP Executive Board (EB) liaison. Non-committee members may submit initiatives through any EB member. Initiatives should be submitted as far in advance of the proposed deadline as possible to allow appropriate review if required. If there is uncertainty regarding the need for EB review of a particular initiative, a member of the EB should be consulted.

2. For such initiatives, the EB requires a summary that includes the proposed:

  • Goals
  • Scope
  • Intended audience
  • Product with all intended content (position paper, review article, website communication, meeting symposium, poster, etc.)
  • Timeline

3. After review, the EB will take one of the following actions:

  • Approve as submitted or with minor revisions for distribution as requested.
  • Recommend more substantial revisions and re-submission to the EB.
  • Recommend further review by specific committees or membership as appropriate through email, web-posting, newsletters, or other acceptable communication. After a specified time for review, a final version of the initiative will then be reviewed by the EB for final approval. The EB will make a determination as to the type of review required based on factors such as the issue of concern, the type of initiative, the members affected, the intended audience, etc. For topics that potentially affect a wider audience outside the Society, the EB may recommend that other professional groups with similar interests, concerns, or initiatives be consulted, i.e., ACVP, Society of Toxicologic Pathology, ACVIM, ESVCP, etc.
  • Decline further distribution of the initiative on behalf of the ASVCP or its committees.
