Residency/Graduate Study in Veterinary Clinical Pathology
The Department of Pathobiology (http://vetmed.illinois.edu/path/) and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (http://vetmed.illinois.edu/vdl/) at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has an opening for veterinarians interested in applied and/or graduate study in clinical pathology. The position will be available as early as August 2010. Successful candidates will have the option to choose an applied program of training in clinical pathology leading to eligibility for the certifying examination of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or a biphasic program consisting of 1) applied training in clinical pathology leading to board eligibility, and 2) study in experimental pathology or a related field leading to a PhD or Masters degree. Estimated completion time for the combined program is five years, depending on prior qualifications. Estimated completion time for the applied program is three years. Stipends begin at $31,600, depending upon experience. Tuition and most University fees are waived and standard University employee health insurance benefits are included. Additionally, the successful candidate will receive an annual travel stipend.
The department is multi-disciplinary in nature and a wide variety of research opportunities are available. Infectious disease, immunology and toxicologic pathology are particular areas of emphasis within the department and opportunities for research utilizing “cutting edge” techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry and microscopy are available. The clinical pathology laboratory is a full-service laboratory providing testing for hematology, clinical chemistry, endocrinology, cytology and immunocytochemistry.

Pathology Residency/Research Fellowship
The Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine invites applications for our 4-year residency/research fellowship in anatomic pathology. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training in anatomic pathology in preparation for certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) along with outstanding research training in a multi-disciplinary mentored environment in a discipline of their choice. This training opportunity is comparable to the residency/PhD opportunities offered at many veterinary schools, yet is distinguished by the much broader research opportunities afforded by a large medical institution, including the option to pursue a PhD in a stellar JHU graduate program.
Program
During the first year trainees gain outstanding clinical experience in anatomic pathology through gross and microscopic examination of pathology cases from the Johns Hopkins University animal colonies, local veterinary practitioners, the Maryland State Laboratory, the Maryland Zoo and the National Aquarium in Baltimore. In years 2 to 4, which are funded by the National Institutes of Health, trainees undertake mentored basic or applied research. If desired, trainees may pursue a PhD concurrent with their research training. Our faculty includes 6 ACVP Diplomates, 4 ACLAM Diplomates, and 9 biomedical research scientists, whose research interests include retrovirology, neuropathology, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, parasitology, carcinogenesis, proteomics, and rodent phenotyping (www.hopkinsmedicine.org/mcp). You also may work with faculty from more than 30 academic departments forming Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Qualifications
This position is targeted for a veterinarian who wishes to pursue a career as an experimental pathologist in a research setting. The Department of Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine at The University of Georgia, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Clinical Pathology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor from individuals with a strong commitment to research and teaching. However, applicants at the rank of Full Professor with a demonstrated record of research and teaching excellence or from highly qualified individuals with primary interest in teaching and service are also encouraged to apply.
The successful applicant will join a team that includes 17 pathologists (including 4 clinical pathologists), anatomic and clinical pathology residents, research scientists, and graduate students. Departmental centers of research emphasis include pathogenesis of infectious disease in food-producing, avian, and aquatic animals, molecular diagnostics, genomics and proteomics, tumor pathobiology, neuropathogenesis of rabies, soft tissue physiology and repair, laboratory animal pathology, and emergency preparedness. Within the College of Veterinary Medicine (www.vet.uga.edu), additional research programs include clinical research in oncology, emergency and critical care medicine, canine arthritis, and equine colic. Senior Clinical Training Scholarship (Residency) in Veterinary Clinical Pathology
Applications are invited from veterinary graduates to undertake a Senior Clinical Training Scholarship within the Department of Pathology and Infectious Diseases with a start date as near as possible to 1st August 2009.
The successful candidate will receive in-depth training in cytology, haematology, clinical biochemistry, endocrinology, urinalysis, surgical pathology, and research. The department comprises three specialist clinical pathologists (including Diplomate ACVP, ECVCP and FRCPath) and three other residents in Clinical Pathology and has a track record of successfully training Residents for specialist examinations. There are also six anatomic pathologists to complement the training.
Residents are involved in small group teaching, seminars, research and diagnostic duty for the clinical pathology laboratory, which services the First Opinion and Referral Hospitals of the College, external practitioners, and the London Zoo. Completion of the programme meets the eligibility requirements for the Board examinations of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (also in progress for the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology).
The stipend starts at £19,100 (taxation exempt) per annum, and is continued for three years subject to satisfactory annual assessment.

Anatomic Veterinary Pathologists
The Department of Pathology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking anatomic veterinary pathologists to participate in our animal pathology program. Candidates must have a DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution and be ACVP Board certified or Board eligible. Junior or senior level positions are available, with the rank of appointment dependent upon the qualifications and experience of the applicant. Training in the pathology of laboratory animals is desirable, but not essential. Appointees will provide diagnostic and collaborative research support to investigators that use animals in their research programs. St. Jude offers an excellent salary and fringe benefit package commensurate with the level of appointment and provides relocation assistance. Veterinary pathologists report to the Chair of Pathology and will work in collaboration with the Director of the Animal Resource Center to integrate the services provided by this laboratory into the overall running of the Animal Resource Center.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is one of the premier pediatric cancer hospitals in the United States and is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. It has a large Faculty of clinical and basic investigators organized into traditional academic departments. Strong inter-departmental programs encompass research on pediatric solid tumors, hematological malignancies, developmental neurobiology and brain tumors, infectious diseases, molecular oncogenesis, and cell and gene therapy. Clinical and basic research activities are carried out in state-of-the-art buildings that provide an environment that fosters close collaborations between clinical and basic investigators.
Veterinary Pathology activities at St. Jude are based primarily in newly built and renovated facilities within the Pathology Department and the 250,000 sq. ft. Integrated Research Center (IRC). These facilities consist of a Clinical Pathology Laboratory, a Necropsy Suite, and a Histology Laboratory. The laboratories are fully equipped and capable of processing a variety of specimens as they relate to animal health issues and research protocols. The IRC includes animal housing of multiple species, transgenic and imaging facilities, and animal research infrastructure to study complex models of cancer, infectious and neurological diseases, and genetic disorders. Our transgenic / gene knockout facility has generated hundreds of genetically modified mouse strains, affording veterinary pathologists the opportunity to collaborate with investigators on a wide range of murine developmental and disease models associated with carcinogenesis, infectious diseases, immunology and immunologic disorders, metabolic disorders and drug development. In addition, as members of the Institution’s Department of Pathology, veterinary pathologists have ample opportunities to interact with the Department’s 15 Faculty members, who are involved in clinical and research activities in human clinical and experimental pathology.

opportunity for a Veterinary Staff Pathologist. You will support a
wide variety of research activities within the Center for Advanced
Preclinical Research and the Mouse Cancer Genetics Program, with a
major focus on studies of functional genomics and disease mechanisms
using genetic approaches to model carcinogenic processes in
transgenic and gene-targeted mice. You will also develop and maintain
specialized pathology research services, including molecular
genetics, molecular pathology, small animal imaging and ex vivo
techniques.
Requirements include a graduate of a veterinary school accredited by
the AVMA (e.g. D.V.M. or V.M.D.), or satisfactory completion of the
foreign equivalency examination (passing grade) administered by the
AVMA, or M.D. with experience in rodent pathology. Board
certification in anatomic pathology preferred. Foreign educated
candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside
of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by
an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met
the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United
States. In addition to the educational requirements, must have a
minimum of two years related experience in experimental and/or
comparative pathology. Prefer documented research in significant
publications and peer-reviewed journals, especially experience in
pathology evaluation of genetically engineered mouse models of
carcinogenesis (in particular, brain, prostate, pancreatic and lung
neoplasms). Experience in the design and conduct of preclinical
trials is a plus, along with basic understanding of molecular
genetics principles. Ability to evaluate independently the
suitability and quality control of research or tests. This position

Veterinary Clinical Pathology Residency
The Department of Physiological Sciences, University of Florida has 1 position available for a 3-year residency program beginning July 15, 2009. The residency is designed to provide thorough Clinical Pathology training for ACVP certification and provide basic research experiences. Those who are qualified and choose to pursue graduate studies concomitant with or subsequent to residency training can do so through the College of Veterinary Medicine graduate programs of Physiological Sciences or Infectious Diseases and Pathology.
The supervised residency trainee is expected to provide diagnostic service in the Clinical Pathology laboratory of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital through interpretation of hematological and biochemical data, as well as cytologic specimens. The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University offers a post-DVM combined residency or residency plus graduate research training position in Clinical Pathology. The program is designed to culminate in specialty board certification (American College of Veterinary Pathology, ACVP) and an MS or PhD degree in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology.
Residency training is facilitated by a diverse faculty, 15 of whom are board certified by the ACVP, and six of whom are certified in clinical pathology. Graduate research training utilizes modern scientific methodology and encourages independent thought with an emphasis on experimental design, data interpretation, and development of written and oral communication skills. The Department of Pathobiology, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for a clinician educator track faculty position in veterinary clinical pathology. The individual will have primary responsibility in diagnostic clinical pathology at the Philadelphia campus. Duties will entail participation in teaching professional veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students and provision of diagnostic service for both the Philadelphia and New Bolton Center teaching hospitals. Service work is primarily generated from in-house patients, but also includes outside submissions of cytologies and bone marrows. Residency in Veterinary Clinical Pathology
The Department of Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tennessee, is accepting applications for a 3-year residency in veterinary clinical pathology with a starting date of July 1, 2009.
The residency is designed to fulfill training requirements and eligibility for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Training will emphasize diagnostic cytology, hematology, and clinical chemistry. Opportunities are also readily available for training in surgical biopsy and general pathology, and for involvement in research. The resident will participate in diagnostic service, teaching of veterinary students, journal clubs, and seminars, and will be encouraged to attend and present at national meetings and write manuscripts for publication.
The Department of Pathobiology currently has three boarded clinical pathologists and one residents; the incoming resident will join a resident who is currently in the 2nd year of training. Our diagnostic service is supported by a diverse case load (including busy zoo and avian/exotics services) with submissions from within the teaching hospital and from outside practices and the Knoxville Zoo, a well-equipped laboratory, and ancillary resources including in-house immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry. The department has six boarded anatomic pathologists, five anatomic pathology residents, and basic research faculty with programs in cancer biology, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and virology (funding sources include NIH, Phillip Morris Foundation, and National Science Foundation).

Joint Residency Position in Veterinary Clinical Pathology
The University of California-Davis and IDEXX Veterinary Services, Inc. are pleased to announce a joint residency position in Veterinary Clinical Pathology available August 1, 2009. The 3-year program is designed to fulfill training requirements and eligibility for board certification in veterinary clinical pathology. Training emphasizes analytical and interpretive skills in diagnostic laboratory medicine (hematology, clinical chemistry, cytology, surgical pathology); basic principles of pathophysiology and disease; and quality control, instrumentation and laboratory data management.
The resident will be based in the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for the first year, and provide direct service and consultation to clinicians, technicians, residents, and students under the supervision of 5 board-certified clinical pathologists. The final two years of training will be split between UC Davis and IDEXX Laboratories in West Sacramento, a 20-minute drive from Davis.
At IDEXX, the resident will interact with 7 board-certified clinical pathologists and other board-certified specialists in a high-caseload environment with an emphasis on diagnostics and consultation. Throughout training, the resident will participate in rounds and seminars, contribute to publication of case material, and design and carry out an original clinical research project. Residents also will participate in teaching hematology and clinical pathology to 1st-, 2nd- and 4th-year veterinary students.
Candidates with a career interest in diagnostic clinical pathology are especially encouraged to apply. Strong oral communication skills are desirable. Minimum qualifications are graduation from a school of veterinary medicine and one-year of internship or equivalent practice experience. Starting salary is $37,308, plus benefits. Continuation to subsequent years is contingent upon satisfactory performance.

Residency in Clinical Pathology
The Department of Veterinary Pathobiology at Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences invites applicants for a residency training position in clinical pathology beginning on July 1, 2009. The goal of the program is to produce well-trained and well-rounded clinical pathologists that are prepared to make important contributions to the improvement of animal and human health in industry, academia, and government. The three-year program fulfills the eligibility requirements for the American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP) certification examination, and the program has a strong record of residents becoming ACVP diplomates.
The new resident will be mentored by three board-certified clinical pathologists and three clinical pathology residents. The residency program emphasizes preparation for board certification in clinical pathology by providing experience in diagnostic service, instruction of veterinary students, participation in diagnostic and research-oriented seminars, and graduate course work.
Training in pathology is based on case material from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and supplemented with a variety of weekly seminars. Candidates are strongly encouraged to complete a PhD degree and may be eligible for continued salary support following the residency. The department has a large faculty with diverse backgrounds and research interests, which provides a stimulating environment and many exciting opportunities for research training. Research strengths within the department include hemostasis, host/pathogen interactions, immunology, molecular genetics, neuroscience, avian pathology, parasitology, virology, comparative pathology, and bacteriology. Interdepartmental research opportunities are also available and signature programs within the college include environmental medicine/toxicology, neurosciences, biodefense and emerging infectious diseases, cardiovascular sciences, reproductive biology, and biomedical genomics. Research training opportunities are also available in the Texas A&M School of Medicine. The facilities include a state-of-the-art necropsy and teaching building with office space for residents and faculty. The Bryan-College Station area offers a diverse college-town atmosphere, a relatively low cost of living, and convenient access to regional urban centers.
Applicants must possess a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited school, and provide evidence of academic strength and interest in pathology.
The starting salary is currently $31,000 per year with medical and retirement benefits. Applicants must have a D.V.M. or equivalent degree.

The major responsibilities of this position include:
• Leading, supporting and developing the Pathology team

Essential to this position are:
• A veterinary degree suitable for registration in Australia

• At least 6-10 years experience in diagnostic anatomic or clinical pathology
• Familiarity with current topics and issues in veterinary clinical medicine. Some experience in private clinical practice is preferred
• A demonstrated commitment to high quality service
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
