2) To educate residents so they obtain a solid understanding of laboratory methods and the pathologic basis of disease to prepare them for careers as veterinary clinical pathologists.
Program Strengths:
Faculty: ACVP-certified veterinary clinical pathologists with extensive teaching experience and commitment to excellence in education; and ACVP-certified veterinary anatomic pathologists who have built a strong anatomic pathology residency program. Case Material: provides broad clinical experience (includes exotics, small and large animals); active clinical oncology program with board-certified oncologists. Research: excellent opportunities to pursue comparative medical or clinical research with faculty; areas of emphasis include infectious diseases, clinical immunology, toxicology, and epidemiology.
Training Activities:
Participate in and support clinical pathology service activities, principally cytology, hematology, urinalysis, and clinical chemistry consultation. Interact with faculty, technologists, and students in other areas, such as microbiology, immunology, and anatomic pathology. Attend and participate in seminars, clinical rounds, slide reviews, and journal clubs, especially weekly Clinical Pathology Rounds (CPRs), in which case material, current literature, and textbooks are reviewed. Third year residents have a major role in organizing CPRs. After one year, residents are scheduled for 2-3 surgical biopsies per week throughout the residency.
