Program Goals:

1) Comprehensive and diverse training leading to board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists; training will focus on the interpretation and pathogenesis of laboratory abnormalities (hematology, clinical chemistry, cytology, histopathology). MPI residents spend 2 years at Michigan State University and 1 1/4 years at MPI Research (a private contract research laboratory in Mattawan, MI that focuses on the non-clinical research needs of the pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical, agricultural and related industries). While at MPI, residents receive training in good laboratory practices, laboratory animal pathology, clinical pathology, and drug safety evaluation studies.

2) Preparation for successful careers in academic institutions, corporate or private practice, or diagnostic laboratories, zoos, biomedical research, public health, government or regulatory agencies.

3) Preparation for graduate study and research in veterinary pathology.

4) Development of oral and written communication skills.

Program Strengths:

Part of the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health supporting a large and varied caseload for the Michigan State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (including the Center for Comparative Oncology) and private practitioners; 4 board-certified clinical pathologists actively involved in residency training; state-of-the-art clinical pathology laboratory staffed by 6 medical technologists/ medical laboratory technicians; surgical biopsy and endocrinology training; NCI combined residency-PhD program available; links to MPI Research and Pfizer; National Food Safety and Toxicology Center.

Training Activities:

Coursework, seminars, clinical pathology rounds, clinical pathology journal club, case discussion seminar, independent study, teaching professional students, clinical diagnostic service.

Additional Training Areas:

Flexible depending on interest of trainee.

Coursework:

Core requirements include Advanced General Pathology, Advanced Systemic Pathology, Advanced Clinical Pathology, weekly case discussion seminar, and weekly department seminar series. Additional courses available depending on the interest of the trainee.
