Program Goals:

1) Board certification.
2) Preparation for employment or continued (post)doctoral training.

Program Strengths:
High volume of very complex cases receiving excellent diagnostic workups. Large species diversity: cytologies, bone marrows, CBCs, and chemistries from small companion animals, exotics, and nonmammalian species; cytologies and bone marrows from horses and cattle and occasionally llamas, sheep, pigs. Diverse research interests within the department, with many opportunities for collaboration. Excellent interactions with anatomic pathology, medicine, critical care, and oncology. Excellent computerized library services.
Training Activities:
Clinical diagnostic service duty, laboratory instrumentation, educational seminars, rounds, and journal club. Small group and didactic veterinary curriculum instruction. Diagnostic histopathology training. Biannual board preparatory examination. Opportunities for clinical research projects, presentation, and publication.
Additional Training Areas:
Independent research projects are encouraged.

Faculty Research Interests:
Neural stem cells, quality assurance and validation, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and Sezary syndrome, platelet kinetics, histiocytic disorders utility of body cavity fluid biochemistry to predict sepsis, hematology instrumentation and methods, multiple myeloma, nasal lymphoma. Educational research including software development (for students and residents), team based learning, and implementation of new educational tools in the veterinary curriculum.
