Residency + PhD. A combined program, with basic sciences heavily emphasized. The ACVP Board Certification Exam may be taken after 3 years if research progress is sufficient.
Length of Training:
5-7 years, with PhD

6 (one opening per year). Three years of state funding/training grants are available.

Program Goals:

Program Strengths:
Cytology, hematology, hematopoiesis, molecular diagnostics, connection with large clinical oncology program, basic science training in infectious disease and oncology.
Training Activities:
Formal coursework, applied microscopy and research seminars, weekly rounds with clinical residents, teaching professional students in lectures and small groups, journal clubs, clinical diagnostic duty, research projects, PhD may be done in a laboratory outside the department.
Additional Training Areas:
Surgical biopsy, research techniques.

Immunology, anatomic pathology, statistics, molecular biology.

Infectious disease, including protozoal biology (malaria host-cell interactions and immunology, Leishmania immunology) and retroviral biology (FIV models of HIV), inherited metabolic diseases, livestock diseases and livestock immunology, toxicology.
