Program Goals:
1) ACVP board certification

Program Strengths:
Annual mock board exam, direct daily supervision of resident while on duty, surgical pathology rotations, high exposure to avian and zoological animal species samples, computer-catalogued teaching sets (ASVCP cases from 1987-present, >2400 glass slide specimens, >1600 slide transparencies, cytology/histopathology correlated cases) International Pathology Slide Bank laser disc and CD, digital image collection capabilities.
Training Activities:
75% diagnostic clinical duty and 25% independent study, weekly clinic rounds, seminars, journal clubs, research projects, formal coursework, hands-on exposure to laboratory equipment, training in quality control procedures, large and small group teaching in clinical pathology course, hematology courses, and cytology course.
Additional Training Areas:
Surgical pathology and optional commercial lab exposure.
Coursework:
Immunology, statistics, mechanisms of disease, molecular biology and protein chemistry.

Faculty Research Interests:
Erythrocyte metabolism, hereditary erythrocyte disorders, molecular biology of Rickettsial organisms and the development of diagnostic assays for tick-transmitted diseases, comparative hematology and cytology, clinical pathological evaluation of marine mammals and exotics, and clinical biochemistry of domestic animals.
