Program Goals:
The goal of the MVetSc program in clinical pathology is to graduate competent, broadly trained diagnosticians. Students also conduct a research project, write a scientific paper, and participate in small group undergraduate teaching. The program provides the resources and opportunity for in-depth investigation of selected clinical cases. The Senior Residency is available to students who have completed the MVetSc or equivalent. This 1-year program provides intensive experience in diagnostic clinical and surgical pathology, experience with informal undergraduate and graduate teaching, and opportunity for independent study. The Senior Residency completes the requirements for eligibility to write the ACVP board examination and provides a sound base for success in this pursuit.
Program Strengths:
The Department of Veterinary Pathology works closely with Prairie Diagnostic Services such that abundant case material and expertise are available in the areas of diagnostic hematology, clinical chemistry, cytopathology, surgical pathology, dermatopathology, mammalian/avian/wildlife pathology, immunohistochemistry and other molecular diagnostic techniques.
Training Activities:
The MVetSc program comprises formal coursework, research, attending and presenting seminars, mystery slide sessions, journal club, diagnostic duty, teaching, and independent study. The senior residency comprises seminar attendance and presentation, journal club participation, undergraduate and graduate teaching, diagnostic duty, and independent study.
Additional Training Areas:
Students may choose optional courses in many areas, including mammalian pathology, toxicopathology, avian pathology, wildlife pathology, techniques in molecular biology, advanced internal medicine, bacteriology, and epidemiology.
Coursework:
For the MVetSC, 36 course credits are required and include a core of diagnostic clinical pathology, clinical hematology, clinical chemistry, and surgical pathology. Optional courses comprise the balance of the required credits, along with a 6-credit research project.
