Program Goals:

To produce successful clinical pathologists that are qualified for ACVP board certification; to produce scientists capable of moving their fields forward through independent research; to provide advanced degree training and original research experience

Program Strengths:

New translational oncology center; diagnostic hematology and cytology; combined doctoral program; accessible mentors; close working relationship between clinical and anatomic pathology services; close working relationship with Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute

Training Activities:

Clinical pathology service duty; surgical biopsy service duty; graduate level courses; small group and didactic teaching of veterinary students; presentations at institutional seminars and annual regional/international meetings; clinical pathology, histopathology and necropsy rounds; original research opportunities; mock board examinations; opportunities for advanced training in pedagogy and grantsmanship

Additional Training Areas:

Flow cytometry; immunochemistry; electron microscopy; BSL-3 laboratories


Courses in general pathology, clinical pathology and histopathology for board preparation, as well as graduate courses specific to the resident's research area.
