2012 ASVCP Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient: Douglas J. Weiss

We congratulate Dr. Doug Weiss on being the recipient of the 2012 ASVCP Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Weiss completed his DVM at the University of Minnesota, followed by an MS at Kansas State University and a PhD at Michigan State University. Even now, Dr. Weiss is continuing his lifelong pursuit of knowledge at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. Some excerpts from letters of support highlight contributions to the profession and his impact on the lives of those around him.

"Dr. Weiss is a special type of person who has followed his own agenda and has done what he thinks is right and taken the time to do it right. We in clinical pathology are thankful he chose our specialty."
Harold Tvedten, Uppsala, Sweden

"I had the privilege of being one of Dr. Weiss's last clinical pathology trainees prior to his retirement in 2007. Even in the later stages of his career, he remained continually curious and always driven to better understand the underlying causes and mechanisms of the pathology he witnessed. It seems as though this was likely a major driving force behind the extensive body of publications for which he is responsible. I think he took it upon himself to fill knowledge gaps and answer the unknown not only to help him become a better pathologist, but so many others could as well."
Jed Overmann, Assistant Clinical Professor, University of Minnesota

"I recently had the honor of being a co-editor with Dr. Weiss for the new edition of Schalm's Veterinary Hematology. Doug was the mastermind on this book with wonderful ideas on the best way to create a very organized, readable hematology resource. The expertise he had gained through over 30 years of working in the field of hematology served him well as an editor, and allowed him to skillfully critique and format information provided by an international cast of authors. He also managed to keep me personally entertained with his email commentaries about life in Minnesota, and with pictures of his cabin in the woods!"
Jane Wardrop, Professor, Veterinary Clinical Sciences
Washington State University

"I first met Dr. Weiss at an impromptu meeting I arranged shortly after I graduated from veterinary school. I had always dreamed of a career in clinical pathology and since I was visiting Minnesota I thought I might meet some of the clinical pathology faculty. Dr. Weiss was most accommodating and spent nearly an hour touring me around the laboratory and discussing the position with me. This was most unexpected since the meeting was not planned ahead of time. Throughout my residency, Dr. Weiss continually went above and beyond to help me personally and professionally, including arranging for me to rent his neighbor's house when I first moved to Minnesota and inviting my husband and me over to his home with some frequency for dinner with his family. He even attended my baby shower!"
